Mt. Greylock is located in a state reservation in the
Berkshires of northwestern Massachussets. It is criss-crossed
by numerous hiking trails, including the Appalachian Trail.
Unfortunately I arrived too late in the day to sample any
of the hiking trails in this attractive area. However, you can
access the highpoint by car, which is what I did.
A war memorial tower made of stone is located on the
highpoint. It has an interior stairway which you can climb
to some observation windows. There is a beacon on top which
was originally destined for Boston harbor, but ended up here
instead. At certain times of the year the beacon is
intentionally not turned on because it seems to cause
confusion for some species of migrating birds.
If you have a chance to hike any of the area trails the
Hopper Trail is reputed to be one of the finest.
